What Is a Well Pump & How Does It Function?

A well pump’s purpose is to pump the water from the well and supply it to your property while maintaining sufficient water pressure. There are two types of well pumps: jet and submersible.

If you have a shallow well, a jet pump might be your best option. Located above ground, these types of well pumps extract water from the ground or suction it through a pipe. In order to create enough suction and fully operate, a jet pump uses an electric powered impeller to move water in front of it, which eventually creates a vacuum that is strong enough to draw up the water. Once the water is drawn, it is stored in the plumbing system.

A submersible pump, on the other hand, is necessary if your well is 100 feet deep or more. Due to advancements in technology, these are becoming more energy-efficient than jet pumps. Designed to deliver more water with higher pressure, these pumps push the water rather than suction it. Powered by a pressure switch, the impeller moves water into the pump. The water is then pushed toward the surface and stored in a tank until used.

The Importance of Well Pump Maintenance

The ability to access water is a necessity for any property. Therefore, it’s important that your well pump is in proper working condition at all times. An easy way to ensure this is to receive routine maintenance at least once a year. During this service, our experienced Salem well pump specialists will perform a thorough inspection to determine whether any minor repairs need to be made.

Well Pump Repair & Replacement

While well pumps are generally reliable, after much use, they are bound to need a repair or two here and there down the line. Because of this, it’s important to know some of the signs of a malfunctioning well pump.

These signs include:

  • Low water pressure
  • Complete lack of water pressure
  • A well pump that short cycles
  • Air that’s lost in the tank
  • Faulty water pressure or well pump control switches

Our Salem well pump technicians will arrive promptly and perform a thorough inspection in order to diagnose the issue. We will then determine whether it would be more cost effective to perform a repair or a complete replacement. You can rest easy knowing we only operate with integrity and honesty and will never try to sell you services or products you don’t truly need.
